THE ORIGIN OF THE INDIAN CARPET INDUSTRY IN MIRZAPUR AND BHADOHI BELT.

The tradition of carpet weaving in India is at least 400 years old and its origin is traced to the early days of the MUGHAL period.

The origin of the carpet industry in MIRZAPUR and BHADOHI belt has a legand. During the period when Shah Abbas rules in Persia. A group of master craftsmen & traders from SHEERAZ of IRAN on invitation of the MUGHALS came to India . Some of them settled at Amritsar and Agra and started carpet weaving there. A batch of those people moved onward. During their tours they were looted by local robbers around AURAI on G.T. Road.The survivors decided to settle themselves a near by village MADHOSINGH Distt. Bhadohi (About ten miles from Mirzapur).

One SHEIKH MADAR-ULLAH, founder of Indian Carpets Industry emerged a successful trader established a registered firm (The first hand woven woolen Pile unit ) under name and style “MIRZAPUR CARPETS” THIS WAS 1835 A.D. His son SHEIKH ABDUL KARIM assisted and developed many new patterns recognised and appreciated by Lords & Governors too. This family then shifted to the city of MIRZAPUR and made another company “MADAR-ULLAH ABDUL KARIM” and started the industry in a commercial way and began to export the carpets. First shipment was made to U.K. by M/S MADAR-ULLAH ABDUL KARIM about the year 1840 and thereafter which finally converted to the World renowned RAHMATULLAH & BROS. in 1885registered at MIRZAPUR. The new members were SHEIKH RAHMATULLAH & SHEIKH SALAMATULLAH. Two sons of HAJI SHEIKH ABDUL KARIM.

These two brothers reached at a very high level of business and won many awards and certificates in the industry.

SHEIKH AHMADULLAH, SHEIKH ABDULHAKEEM and SHEIKH ABDUL JALEEL, sons of SHEIKH SALAMATULLAH, SHEIKH AHSANULLAH and SHEIKH ABDUL JABBAR, sons of SHEIKH RAHAMTULLAH took over the business and worked till 1977. After their retirement the company was closed and the heirs could not do well.

On other hand the daughters of the SHEIKH SALAMATULLAH AND RAHAMATULLASH’ s family were also involved in the same business. Out of A COMPANY named and style M/S MORAD ORIENTAL RUGS (P) LTD.  The company is situated in the same MOHALLA. At present this company is a manufacturing of woolen pile carpets and hand tufted carpets. We have a beautiful designs and nice colour combination etc.
